When’s the best time to travel?

No matter when you choose to embark on a Rocky Mountaineer journey, you’ll encounter stunning scenery, glimpses of wildlife, and plenty of evidence of nature’s abundance. Every season brings a different experience – each beautiful in its own way. So, if you have flexible dates, consider what you most are hoping to see and experience, and we will match it to the best itinerary possible.

Spring Tours

• The last chill of winter is still in the air, and your clients will see snow-dusted mountains and icebreaking over alpine lakes. High water levels make rushing rivers and crashing waterfalls a breathtaking sight.
• Flowers start to bloom, with fields filled with vibrant colors.
• WILDLIFE: As birds’ nest and bears come out of hibernation, spring is one of the best times for wildlife watching.

Summer Tours

• The days are at their longest over the summer, giving your clients more daylight hours to explore each of the destinations.
• Rainforests are lush and full, and the arid desert canyons have an especially rugged beauty during June, July, and August.
• WILDLIFE: The dry, warm weather serves as the setting for baby animals who emerge under their parents’ watchful eyes.

Autumn Tours

• Autumn in Western Canada brings crisp mountain air and an assortment of colors as the leaves begin to change color. The vibrant display of red, orange, and gold, mixed with evergreen is set against newly snow-capped mountain peaks.
• WILDLIFE: Spawning salmon attract the attention of hungry bears and eagles, making for excellent wildlife-watching opportunities.

Smoothing the Way for Mobility and Accessibility

We won’t let mobility issues keep you from having a wonderful train travel experience. Rocky Mountaineer makes it as easy as possible for guests using wheelchairs to get on, off, and around their rail cars. Please read through the information below to see how we can accommodate your clients’ particular needs.

• For guests using wheelchairs only to travel longer distances
• You can use golf carts at all but one of their stations to transport you to their rail cars should you desire assistance, or you can choose to use their own wheelchairs to pull up to their rail cars.

While Quesnel does not offer golf carts, the platform is large enough for you to pull right up to any rail car with their wheelchairs. Alternatively, Rocky Mountaineer can use one of their own wheelchairs to assist you at this station. In hotels, they can also request rooms that are close to elevators, so you don’t have far to go (subject to availability).

After you have comfortably boarded the train, their wheelchairs will be transported separately to their destinations ready for you when they arrive. Wheelchairs will need to be able to fold down into pieces of 50lbs or less for the health and safety of our employees transporting them. The same guidance as above applies to the use of scooters.

For guests who can transfer from a wheelchair to a regular seat

Rocky Mountaineer uses a hydraulic lift to transfer guests onto the train in their own wheelchairs. Your wheelchair needs to be 24-inches (or less) wide to fit through the doorway. From there, they can transfer guests onto a 15-inch-wide wheelchair that lets you move easily down the aisle of the railcar. Alternatively, if your wheelchair exceeds the measurements above, they can transfer you into their own wheelchairs prior to boarding the train. Rocky Mountaineer’s wheelchairs can be used to transfer to the dining room (in GoldLeaf Service) as well as the washroom. They’ll make sure that guests are assigned to a rail car with an ADA Washroom that has wider doorways and grab-bars. They can accommodate guests transferring from a wheelchair to a regular seat in all service levels.

For guests using wheelchairs full-time

They use the hydraulic lift to transfer guests onto the train. Your wheelchair needs to be 24-inches (or less) wide to fit through the doorway. Rocky Mountaineer can accommodate full-time wheelchair users with the use of tie-downs, in SilverLeaf Service only. There are a limited number of rail cars with the tie-down feature, and while they will do their best to accommodate, this could restrict travel dates available to you. Meals will be served at the comfort of your seats, and staff will make sure that you are assigned to a train car with an ADA Washroom with wider doorways and grab bars.

The hydraulic lift may not be available on motorcoach transfers and tours

Please note that Rocky Mountaineer’s hydraulic lift will not be available for motorcoach transfers and tours. If you’re not able to board the coach with minor assistance, we would need to let them know ahead of time and we will do our best to make sure they arrange handy-van taxi transfers. Inability to board a coach may limit their ability to offer you sightseeing tours on coaches, but private tours could be an option.

Accessible hotel room availability

Rocky Mountaineer can also explore the availability of accessible hotel rooms – equipped with grab bars or shower stools or roll-in showers if required. You’ll need to request accessible rooms when you make your bookings so we can confirm the availability of this specialized inventory with their hotel partners. As they do have limited accessible room options, it may be necessary to seek out alternate hotels.
